From DCF to Direct Cap: Why CRE Professionals Are Expanding with Rockport VAL

About this video

Rockport VAL is often viewed as a discounted cash flow tool, but for today’s CRE professionals it has become much more.

In this conversation, Stu Sleppin, Managing Director of Rockport VAL, and Lynn Clarke, Head of Customer Success at Rockport VAL, share how lenders and appraisers are expanding their use of the platform. From direct capitalization models to litigation and tax appeal work, VAL is being used across a growing range of valuation and review workflows.

They also explain how Rockport’s Excel integration gives professionals the best of both worlds: the power and transparency of robust, cloud-based modeling with the flexibility of decades of custom-built spreadsheets. This combination allows lenders, fee appraisers, and review appraisers to standardize reporting, accelerate reviews, and maintain confidence in their results.

For those exploring ways to modernize without losing what works, this conversation highlights how VAL supports both approaches, creating flexibility where the industry needs it most. 👉 Learn more about Rockport VAL: https://www.therockportgroup.com/products/rockport-val

We talk to numerous clients every week, and they're starting to diversify their portfolios. Not only are they doing DCF, but they're also using VAL for their litigation work, as well as for tax appeals. I'm also finding that clients are putting their direct cap models in VAL and making VAL the repository for all their models. We're creating a new industry standard, absolutely. I believe that. And it's neat to see how everyone's using VAL to accomplish all these goals. Everyone's special sauce is in their Excel spreadsheets.

So, a lot of our clients that we're seeing are modeling the information in VAL and then synchronizing that information into Excel. So, by a click of a button, you're populating all your Excel reports, and that could include your own branding, your own customizations, and your own metrics. They've been working on their Excel models for decades. We know that everyone loves their Excel models. VAL loves Excel. That's why the developers created the Excel add-in where you could have the best of both worlds.

You could have the robust modeling of VAL and then finish it off in your Excel model. And that is a large contributing factor of how and why we're growing as quickly as we have been. Definitely it's our feature-rich platform. It's definitely how awesome VAL is, but it's the people that you get to work with. Absolutely.
